Be still

Psalm 46 was written for a city under pressure. Its answer is not escape, but stillness before God.

The pastor's office

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

Psalm 46:10

Psalm 46 opens with mountains falling into the sea and nations in uproar. It is not a quiet psalm. Yet in the middle of the noise comes the command: be still.

The Hebrew word carries the sense of letting go, of dropping your hands. It is what a soldier does when the battle is no longer his to fight. God is not asking us to feel calm. He is asking us to stop trying to hold everything together ourselves.

Notice where the psalm looks: “among the heathen”. On a Sunday at No. 20 we worship in French and English with people from many nations. Every one of them is already in God's hands.

Find five minutes this week with no screen and no agenda. Sit, breathe, read Psalm 46 aloud, and let your hands drop.
