Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105
When we looked for a name for this blog, Psalm 119:105 seemed obvious, and not only because of my family name. The verse is not about the pastor, though. It is about the Word, and about what a lamp actually does.
An oil lamp in the psalmist's day lit a few steps ahead, not the whole valley. You could see where to put your foot, and then the next one. That is often how Scripture works in our lives. We ask God for a five-year plan; he gives us a verse for Tuesday morning.
Many of us in Geneva live with long horizons: contracts that end, permits to renew, children who will one day move away. It is natural to want to see it all. The psalm does not promise that. It promises that we will not walk in the dark.
This week, try reading one psalm slowly each morning before you look at your phone. Ask one question: what is the next faithful step today? Then take it.
